The Next Generation Mercedes-Benz SL Will Be Inspired By The 300SL

KENTOZ.COM - Mercedes’ chief designer, Gordon Wagner, confirmed this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the brand has some big plans for the next-generation SL. “Even though I have been 20 years in the company, I have never done an SL, except for the next one that will come which will be the closest to the nicest SL, which for me is the 300SL,” Wagner stated to Australia’s CarAdvice.

While the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL will be inspired by the 300SL, it won’t be a retro model with gullwing doors. “Of course not [a gullwing, but a] completely new design. Not a retro design or anything [like that] but take the DNA and spirit of [300SL] for the new car. I can just say the future of the SL will be very, very bright.”

Given the fact that the average lifespan for each SL generation has been over 10 years and the fact that the current SL debuted in 2013, means that we likely still have a few years to wait for the arrival of new SL.
